The Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute reports that the United Nations last week handed out its 2008 prizes in the field of human rights. The two recipients that CF-HRI singles out for condemnation are former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour and Human Rights Watch, both of whom are strong supporters of abortion and gay rights. The one that jumped out at me, however, was Ramsey Clark. According to the article:

[General Assembly president Miguel d’Escoto] Brockmann characterized the recipients as “an inspiration to all of us who seek and believe another type of society, another type of political system, another economic model, another world is possible where all persons will be treated as brothers and sisters, without discrimination, exclusion or destruction of life in all its forms.”

That is how he describes the former Attorney General of the United States under Lyndon Johnson, who also happens to be one of the founders of International ANSWER, a front for the Stalinist Workers World Party, and the International Action Center, a pseudo-think tank that serves the same purpose. Clark has never met a Communist, Muslim, or Arab dictator (including the Castro brothers, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Bashir Assad, Daniel Ortega, and, most recently, the new Maoist prime minister of Nepal) he didn’t like, yet he’s being held up as a paragon of human rights advocacy by the UN.

Really, is there any better proof needed that the UN has become an Orwellian institution?
