Yet more proof that 1) many liberals don’t understand the religious liberty interest at stake in the HHS contraception mandate controversy, and 2) have decided that an unnecessary insurance perk is more important than the First Amendment and the freedom of conscience it is meant to protect. From the Weekly Standard:
House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said Thursday morning that the government should require self-insured religious institutions, such as the Catholic church in Washington, D.C., to directly pay for contraception and abortifacients.
At a press conference, Leader Pelosi was asked by the Weekly Standard: “The Catholic Church in Washington, D.C., is a self-insured institution. Should the Catholic Church in Washington, D.C., be required to pay for these morning-after pills and birth control if they find that morally objectionable?”
Pelosi talked about the importance of women’s health, and then said, “Yes, I think that all institutions who cover, who give, health insurance should cover the full range of health insurance issues for women.”
Pelosi, of course, is a cafeteria Catholic who rejects her church’s teaching not only on birth control but on abortion. She has made very clear that she considers “the full range of health insurance issues” to include abortion. That being the case, I consider it only a matter of time before she, and those on the left who think like her, begin the drumbeat for religious organizations to cover abortion in their insurance coverage.
